Day 23: The Day I Didn't Spend Any Money

Today was a really good day!  I made some delicious juices, I went for two very long walks (despite the rain), and I didn't spend any money today.

I began the day with a Ginger Sweet Potato juice that was a gorgeous bright orange color and that also tasted wonderful.  It had just enough of a citrus taste to get me up and going on my first walk.

 Ginger Sweet Potato Juice*
  • 1 large sweet potato (I don't peel it, but I do cut it in half
  • 1 large carrot (or two medium carrots)
  • 1 large slice pineapple (1/2 - 1 cup)
  • 1/4 in. ginger root

However, I was a disappointed by how little juice was produced by this recipe.  It really was not much.  In fact, my mug maybe half full when I finished pouring my juice.  Boo!

Regardless, the juice was mighty tasty, so I highly recommend making this when you want a sweet, refreshing drink.

After volunteering at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) this morning, I thought I'd take a walk from Eastlake Ave E and Hamlin Street E to downtown Seattle for a meeting I had at 5th and Jefferson.  Mapmywalk.com says that I walked 4.43 miles (this total includes the 1.2 miles I walked from my apartment in the U District to the ADA offices)!

During my meeting, I got hungry, so I started drinking my second juice of the day, Beginner Green.

Beginner Green**
  • 1 apple
  • 1 bunch celery (it's good the recipe called for celery, because I really needed to use what I had before it went too wilty)
  • 1/2 in. ginger root
  • 1 lemon (I don't peel my lemons, but I do cut off the stubs at the ends)
  • 1 orange (I peel my oranges and cut them in half)
  • 1 cup spinach (I just grab a huge handful, which I think is more like 2 cups)
My meeting was so productive and enjoyable that I decided I would walk home too, which meant that I didn't have to spend any money today!  Yay!  No bus fare = frugal day!

For my walk home, I decided to walk from 5th & Jefferson downtown up to Capitol Hill via Seneca and down Broadway toward campus.  I've always wanted to walk this path, but never had time.  Well, today I made time.  And I got in another 4.52miles!  Yay!  Even though my pants and shoes were soaked, I really enjoyed my walk.  However, I'm so tired that I might fall asleep after I make my next juice: Citrus Sensation.

Citrus Sensation:***
1 large apple (I used two small apples)
1 medium grapefruit (peeled and cut in quarters)
2 medium peaches (pits removed)

I invite you to try these juices out.  All of them were wonderful!  But remember, the Sweet Potato Ginger drink will not yield much, so if you're really hungry/thirsty, you might want to double the recipe.

It has just occurred to me that I said I would incorporate more veggies into my juice rotation, which did not happen today.  That's highly unusual for me, so tomorrow I plan on getting some greens into my bellyOn tomorrow's menu is broccoli, carrots, kale, beets and celery.  Stay tuned on how I mix them together and whether the combination makes me happy or gag.

I hope you have a great night!
