Day 22

It's Day 22 and I've already had my first juice.  It was a delicious Spinach Strawberry concoction that I absolutely love.  Here's the recipe, if you'd like to taste it for yourself.

Strawberry Spinach Juice
10-12 strawberries
3/4 in. ginger root
1 small cucumber
3 handfuls of spinach (approx. 4 cups)
3 apples
1/2 lemon

I then went grocery shopping, since I was down to only 1/4 head of cabbage, 1 red pepper, and a few collard green leaves.  Ouch.  I couldn't really make anything tasty (at least to me) with that.

I typically go to QFC, because it's the closest to my house and it's also on a bus line, if my haul becomes too heavy to carry home.  That usually happens, and it did again today!

I ended up buying:
  • 2 black plums
  • 2 pears
  • 2 bunches of organic kale
  • 1 bunch of organic collards
  • 1 lime
  • some ginger
  • 1 bunch of celery
  • 4 cucumbers
  • 13 apples (two bags, which was probably closer to 20)
  • 1 box of strawberries
  • 4 oranges
  • 1 green pepper
  • 1 cantaloupe
  • 3 beets
  • 2 peaches (they're out of season, but I wanted to try a new juice)
  • 1 bunch of green seedless grapes
  • 2 grapefruit (Anyone who know me knows that this is pretty big for me.  I don't tend to like this fruit at all.)
  • Dill
  • 1 bag of carrots
  • 2 heads of broccoli
  • 2 bunches of spinach
  • 1 red yam
  • 1 whole pineapple (QFC didn't have the cored pineapples available)
  • 3 lemon
  • 1 mango (mangoes were on sale for $1 each, so check them out!)
My grand total came to a whopping $75.77. OUCH!!! That's probably the most I've spent so far.  And it will only last me 7-8 days.  Ugh.

In a few minutes I'm going to head over to the kitchen and whip up a batch of Pear, Kale, and Lemon juice.  Here's the recipe for you to try out.

Pear, Kale & Lime Juice
1 bunch kale (any kind is fine)
1 pear
1/2 lime
2 inches ginger root

Personally, I didn't much care for this juice.  Out of all the citrus out there, limes are my least favorite.  I might try this again with a lemon and see how it tastes.  It's also very gingery. If you like ginger, you'll most likely like this juice.

After juicing I went to meeting at a French pastry shop!  Holy crap, did it smell good in there.  It has been a while since I was really tempted by smelling something delicious, but I could have definitely gone for a croissant.  Yummy!

Instead, I had my juice.  Yay me! (*sarcasm)

For dinner, I ended up making myself a Grape Heart Juice.  Again, this had ingredients I wouldn't normally choose, but I thought I should experiment a little.

Grape Heart
2 cups red grapes (I substituted green for red)
1 grapefruit, cut into quarters and peeled
1 tsp powered dried linden flowers (I have no idea what these are so I omitted them)
For someone who doesn't care for the taste of grapefruit, I was surprised at how much I liked this juice. It was sweet with just a bit of tart in there.  Very nice.  I would suggest chilling this for a bit before serving, because I like the colder version more than the room temperature one.

Overall, today's juices were pretty good.  They were very refreshing, which was nice!

I had loads of energy on my walk from Wallingford to the U District, and I think the juice is a big factor in that.

Tomorrow I won't have as many fruity drinks.  I like to balance fruits with veggies so I can get as many nutrients as possible, while keeping my sugar intake down.

I hope tomorrow's choices will be even yummier than today's!

  1. Wow, I'm impressed that you got grapefruit. Love the pictures and descriptions. We haven't made it out to Costco, but we'll all go soon!
